Creativity, Action, Service at Strothoff International School

“Social Service is not simply an emotional impulse, but it is a demonstration of attitudes and values”
Maria Piaggio

CAS, which stands for creativity (e.g. participation in a theatre group), action (e.g. table-tennis for classmates) and service (e.g. working in a social institution), implies that education is not confined to the traditional classroom only, but in order to develop the student’s personality a more comprehensive approach has to be adopted.

The CAS programme is a compulsory component of the DP programme, where the students have to fulfil 150 hours in two years.  This programme aims to developing intellectual curiosity, self-reliance, individual initiative and creativity and help students to discover new skills and fields of interest.

The social element of CAS is the most significant one, because its demanding goal is to help students to develop a sense of awareness and empathy for the needy and underprivileged people in society. Through this programme, our students willlearn to willingly take social responsibility and serve others.

The other two elements are very important as well, as they provide access, balance and flexibility to meet individual students’ interests and preferences.

A combination of creativity, action and service is absolutely feasible.
Questionnaires will be used to find out about the students’ individual preferences, which will help to address the most suitable local institutions/organizations and thus facilitate their start into this new programme. However, it is intended that the students each choose their programme individually.

All activities will take place outside the classroom; remuneration for such activities will not be permitted.

An international education must include the active development of attitudes and values and should help to overcome boundaries, which are set by ethnic membership, social classes, religion, gender and politics. In order to live up to these high requirements, our students are also asked to do public service in the international community.

Current CAS activities

We have decided to cooperate with the international non-profit-organization Habitat for Humanity, which has set up ca. 300.000 houses for needy people in about 100 countries. We intend to do part of our CAS-programme in Hungary at the end of May 2011.
After the autumn break, we already started with our fundraising activities for the required construction material. The proceeds from our Christmas Fair helped us a lot to get closer to our goal of building houses in Hungary. The parents will cover the travel expenses.
Many, many thanks to those who have supported us so comprehensively!
