Middle Years Programme – ages 12-15

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) provides a framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. We foster the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement.

*The Mittlere Reife is a school leaving certificate in Germany that is roughly comparable with the American high school diploma or the British GCSE. It is regularly awarded after ten years of schooling.

MYP Curriculum

The grade 6 to 10 MYP programme enables us to develop the learning potential of each student. We take students from transdisciplinary learning into interdisciplinary learning and equip them with the skills necessary to succeed in the IB Diploma Programme.

MYP students study eight subjects

Important themes

  • Global contexts
    Students make connections between their different subject classes and the real world. Global contexts help students see traditional subject material from different perspectives.
  • Approaches to learning
    We help students to recognise their own learning styles and improve in the areas of weakness. Students take responsibility for their own learning. Approaches to Learning Rubric
  • Interdisciplinary work
    We develop the skills that allow students to think holistically, work in an interdisciplinary way and be interculturally aware.
  • Critical thinking and reflection
    Learning the course material is not enough. Through the development of critical thinking, students are able to solve problems and communicate their understanding in a local and global context. Reflection helps students to see where they are in their learning so that they can clearly see how to improve.
  • Criterion-based assessment
    Internationally benchmarked Criterion Based Assessment (rubric based assessment) allow students to see how they will be assessed before they start work.
  • Action and service programme
    Allows the students at Strothoff International School to reach out to the local and global community.
  • Personal project
    In the final year of the programme, each student completes a personal project. This is a significant piece of work that enables students to investigate and research an area of interest. The personal project is a consolidation of the skills learned throughout the MYP.  

Community and Service in the MYP

Being a Global Citizen is a tenet of the IB programmes and takes many forms in academic and extracurricular life. The “Action in the MYP” programme teaches Middle Years students how to become engaged in their communities through service to others. 

Community action

We encourage students to act on their beliefs, as a way to improve the lives and circumstances of others. Strothoff International School students are currently involved in individual and group projects including: lunch helpers, buddy readers, elder care, responsible data analysis and anti-slavery advocacy.
