Last week, the Personal Project Exhibition of the 10th grade students at Strothoff International School took place. Once again this year, a wide variety of creative and thought-provoking projects were presented during a two-day exhibition.
What is the Personal Project?
The Personal Project is a key component of the Middle Years Programme (MYP) within the IB framework and serves as the transition to the Diploma Programme, the international high school diploma. In this project, students choose a topic they are passionate about and create a project around it. The entire process – from planning and research to execution – must be documented in a detailed report. The culmination of the project is an exhibition where students present their work. The goals of the Personal Project are to promote independence, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving, as well as to strengthen key skills such as research, reflection, problem-solving, and communication, which are core to the IB programme.
Student Projects from the Exhibition
This year, the students demonstrated remarkable creativity, with many projects designed to provide a sustainable benefit to the school community or society at large.
One student developed a cookbook featuring desserts from around the world, which will be added to the school library's collection. In addition, she learned how to prepare each dessert and delighted visitors with sweet treats.
Another student focused on homelessness, researching its causes and seeking to dispel common misconceptions about homeless individuals. He presented his findings through vlogs and collected donations – both monetary and in-kind – based on the needs of the homeless people he encountered during his project. He also took advantage of the school’s charity run event this Wednesday, using it as an opportunity to raise money for the homeless in his community.
Other exciting projects included digital tools designed to help future students manage their time more effectively during their high school years, as well as a self-built and programmed robot that fascinated students in the areas of technology and innovation.
The Exhibition
This year’s exhibition was a great success. The students proudly presented their projects and answered questions from interested visitors with enthusiasm. In doing so, they not only showcased their creative ideas but also demonstrated their self-confidence and communication skills – qualities that will be important for their future. With this exhibition, the students’ middle school years are coming to a close, and preparations for the Diploma Programme, the IB high school program, are now underway.
