Our regular contact with the animal shelter provided an answer. They needed a new washing machine and to renovate a building for their smaller residents. Rabbits, birds, and other small animals were previously living in the same building as the dogs, on opposite ends. The renovation work had been a long-term goal of the animal shelter, which we wanted to support in a direct manner. After purchasing the washing machine, and funding the supplies, three days were marked on our calendars.  
 
A New Home for Honey and Hook  
The renovation work began bright and early (at least for the teenagers), at 9 in the morning. Our first task – sanding the walls – turned out to be more exhausting than anticipated, but effective teamwork fueled progress.  Once the walls were smooth, we taped the room, wiped off the walls, and were able to start with the artistic part of the project: painting. After a rather clumsy attempt at ladder-climbing, we assigned the tall members of the team (thank you Mr. Slough and Clevent) to paint the upper parts. Compliments of “you-look-great" were exchanged, as club members were covered in paint. During breaks, we would visit the smaller residents, including Honey and Hook. Soon, they would be able to move into their new home. 
 
The Impact   
After three days of hard work, and t-shirts covered in paint to keep as a souvenir, the renovation was complete. The shelter has begun to move in the rabbits, birds, and other small pets. To our relief, the staff were overjoyed with the results. So were Honey and Hook, who would finally have a space of their own. To us, the project was rewarding – we got to witness our impact firsthand.  

Looking Forward 
With our motto ‘think global, act local’, we are proud to support the Dreieich humane society. We look forward to continuing our support for the animal shelter over the next school year.
